“Can I use my debit card at an online casino?” has a more complicated answer in Canada than almost anywhere else. Most Canadians carry an Interac debit card, and on its own that card doesn’t work for online casino payments. What does work is the Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard function that many banks now add to the same card, or a separate debit card from your bank. Knowing which one you have saves a lot of failed deposits.
This page explains the types of debit card, which ones casinos accept, how debit compares with Interac e-Transfer and iDebit (which also take money straight from your bank), and what to expect when you withdraw.
Quick answer: Look for a Visa or Mastercard logo on your bank card. If it has one, that side of the card can make casino deposits online, and it avoids the cash advance charges of a credit card. A plain Interac debit card can’t, because Interac’s online card payment service closed in 2024. If your card doesn’t qualify, Interac e-Transfer moves money straight from your bank account and is accepted almost everywhere.
Casinos That Accept Debit Cards
About this list. Our general picks for players outside Ontario and Alberta, ranked by overall review score. All accept Visa and Mastercard, which includes Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard. All also accept Interac e-Transfer, the bank-account option most Canadians use.
Which Debit Card Do You Have?
| Card | How to recognise it | Works for online casino deposits? |
|---|---|---|
| Interac debit only | Interac logo, no Visa or Mastercard logo | No. Interac’s online card payment service, Interac Online, was discontinued on October 31, 2024 |
| Visa Debit | Visa Debit logo, often on the same card as Interac | Yes. The Visa side handles online payments. Issued by CIBC, RBC, Scotiabank and TD, among others; RBC also offers a virtual Visa Debit |
| Debit Mastercard | Mastercard Debit logo | Yes. Less common in Canada; reported on some BMO accounts and at Simplii |
| Prepaid card | “Prepaid” on the card; loaded in advance | Sometimes, for deposits only. Prepaid cards are covered in our look at Mastercard at online casinos |
On a card that carries both Interac and Visa Debit, Canada’s debit rules route online and international payments through Visa, while Interac handles your in-store purchases. You don’t need to choose: enter the card number in the casino cashier and it runs as Visa Debit.
Debit vs Credit at a Casino
A debit card spends money you already have. That has three practical advantages for gambling:
- No cash advance charges. Many banks bill gambling on credit cards as a cash advance, with a fee and interest from day one. Debit payments are treated as ordinary purchases. Our explainer on Visa and credit cards at casinos covers the credit card side in full.
- Fewer declines. Banks are more relaxed about debit than credit, though some still block payments to offshore casinos.
- A natural limit. You can’t deposit money you don’t have.
One caution: at least one major bank’s debit terms are reported to prohibit receiving credits from online gambling, which would affect withdrawals to that card. If you plan to withdraw to a debit card, check your account terms or use Interac e-Transfer for cashing out.
Debit Card vs Interac e-Transfer vs iDebit
All three take money from your bank account, which is why they get confused. They work very differently.
| Debit card (Visa Debit / Debit Mastercard) | Interac e-Transfer | iDebit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Enter your card number in the cashier | Approve a transfer in your banking app | Log in to your bank through iDebit |
| Deposit speed | Instant | Instant to a few minutes | Instant |
| Withdrawals | Sometimes; 1 to 5 business days | Widely available; 24 to 48 hours at good casinos | Available; usually 2 to 3 business days |
| Acceptance at Canadian-facing casinos | Wide | Near universal | Common |
| Bonus eligibility | Usually | Almost always | Usually |
For most players, Interac e-Transfer is the better bank-account option because withdrawals are faster and more widely supported. A debit card is a good second choice if e-Transfer isn’t offered or your bank limits e-Transfer amounts. Our overview of Canadian casino payment methods compares every option.
Debit Cards at the Casinos We Review
Most of our reviews record Visa and Mastercard together, which covers debit and credit versions. A few points stand out:
- LuckyDays lists Visa and Mastercard debit specifically, from C$15, and card deposits qualify for its bonus.
- BetVictor, PartyCasino and bwin pay out to cards in 1 to 5 or 3 to 5 business days in Ontario.
- Mega Casino accepts card deposits from C$10, pays card withdrawals in 1 to 3 business days and sets no minimum withdrawal.
- Lucky Spins accepts card deposits but doesn’t pay out to cards, so plan to withdraw by Interac.
How to Deposit With a Debit Card
- Check your card for a Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard logo. If your bank offers a virtual debit card, you can find the number in your banking app.
- In the casino cashier, choose Visa or Mastercard. There is rarely a separate “debit” option.
- Enter the card number, expiry date and security code, with your address exactly as your bank holds it.
- Approve any security check in your banking app.
- The deposit appears instantly. Check that your bank’s daily limit allows the amount.
Withdrawing to a Debit Card
Where a casino supports card payouts, debit cards are accepted more often than credit cards, and the money goes into your bank account. Expect 1 to 5 business days after the casino approves the withdrawal. Many casinos pay back to a card only up to the amount you deposited and send the rest by another method, so have Interac or an e-wallet ready. Verify your identity early so a first withdrawal isn’t held up. Withdrawal speeds by method are compared in our ranking of fast payout casinos in Canada.
Small Deposits With a Debit Card
Debit card minimums are usually C$10 to C$20. That makes a debit card a reasonable choice at low-stake casinos, though Interac often allows smaller first deposits. Our minimum deposit casinos hub covers the lowest entry points by method.
Ontario and Alberta
Licensed casinos in Ontario and Alberta accept Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard, and bank declines are less common there than at offshore casinos.
Safety
A debit card spends directly from your chequing account, so protect the details carefully. Use it only at licensed casinos with an encrypted cashier, turn on transaction alerts in your banking app, and consider a separate account for entertainment money. Our tips on keeping your financial details safe at casinos go further. How we check payments is set out in our review methodology.
Budget First
Debit keeps you to money you have, but your chequing account can hold more than your gambling budget. Set a deposit limit in your casino account, or fund a separate account with only what you plan to spend. If you need support, see our page on responsible gambling in Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my debit card at an online casino in Canada?
Yes, if it has a Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard function. A card with only the Interac logo can’t make online casino payments, because Interac Online was discontinued in October 2024.
Why doesn’t my Interac debit card work at online casinos?
Interac debit works in stores. Its online payment service, Interac Online, closed on October 31, 2024. Use Interac e-Transfer instead, or a card with a Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard logo.
Is a debit card better than a credit card for casino deposits?
Usually. Debit payments are treated as purchases, so there are no cash advance charges, and they are declined less often.
Can I withdraw casino winnings to a debit card?
At many casinos, yes, typically in 1 to 5 business days. Some casinos only refund your deposit to the card and pay the rest another way, and some don’t offer card withdrawals at all.
What is the difference between a debit card and Interac e-Transfer?
With a debit card you enter your card number in the cashier. With e-Transfer you approve a transfer in your banking app. E-Transfer withdrawals are usually faster and more widely available.
Which Canadian banks issue Visa Debit?
CIBC, RBC, Scotiabank and TD all offer Visa Debit, usually combined with your Interac card. Debit Mastercard is less common, reported on some BMO accounts and at Simplii.
Do debit card deposits qualify for bonuses?
Usually, since casinos treat them as Visa or Mastercard deposits. Check the bonus terms for the minimum deposit.
What is the minimum debit card deposit?
Usually C$10 to C$20, depending on the casino.
