Online Poker Canada 2026: Real Money Rooms, Games and Legal Sites

Poker is the one game on a casino site where you can genuinely beat the competition, because the competition is other players, not the house. It is also the game where Canada’s patchwork of rules matters most. An Ontario player sits in a separate pool from the rest of the world, while players elsewhere in the country face a different set of options entirely.

This page explains where Canadians can play real money poker, how player pools work, what the main formats are, and how poker rooms make their money.

Quick answer: In Ontario, the regulated poker rooms include PokerStars (now inside FanDuel), GGPoker, BetMGM and bwin, and all play in an Ontario-only pool. Alberta has no confirmed poker room in our reviews yet, and availability elsewhere is less clear, so check before you sign up. Unlike casino games, poker pits you against other players, and the room takes a small rake. Casino-style poker against a dealer is a different product.

About this list. These are our general casino picks for players outside Ontario and Alberta, ranked by our overall review score. Most offer casino poker games rather than a player-vs-player poker room, so read the sections below if a real poker room is what you want. If you live in Ontario or Alberta, use a provincially licensed site (see the next section).

Where Canadians Can Play Online Poker

Where you live Your options Player pool
Ontario Regulated rooms such as PokerStars on FanDuel, GGPoker, BetMGM Poker and bwin Ontario players only
Alberta Regulated market opened July 13, 2026; no poker room confirmed in our reviews To be confirmed
Other provinces Offshore and international rooms; check availability, as reports conflict Varies by room

Ontario

Ontario has the most developed market. Our PokerStars review explains the 2026 change: the old PokerStars Ontario site closed, and the poker room relaunched inside FanDuel, with players opening new FanDuel accounts. Our bwin review notes that bwin, BetMGM and FanDuel are the three Ontario brands that put a casino, poker room and sportsbook on one account. Our list of licensed Ontario online casinos covers the full market.

Alberta

Alberta’s market opened on July 13, 2026. Poker operators are expected, but we have not confirmed a live room in our reviews. PokerStars did not hold an Alberta licence at launch. Our page on Alberta’s regulated casinos tracks what is live.

Other Provinces

Outside Ontario and Alberta, some international poker rooms accept Canadians, but this changes. Reports conflict even on PokerStars’ international site. Check that a room accepts players from your province before you deposit, and read our explainer on provincial and offshore gambling sites for what protection you do and do not have.

Why Ontario Poker Pools Are Separate

Ontario’s rules keep regulated poker inside the province, so Ontario players only meet other Ontario players. That means smaller fields, smaller guaranteed prize pools and fewer tables at quiet hours than on a global site. Rooms and regulators have discussed sharing pools with other jurisdictions, and with Alberta in particular, but as of October 2026 no such pool is live. If pools do merge, game choice would improve quickly.

Ontario Poker Rooms Compared

Room Account Player pool Worth knowing
PokerStars on FanDuel Shared with FanDuel Casino and Sportsbook Ontario only, separate from PokerStars’ global site Old PokerStars Ontario accounts did not transfer, so returning players need a new FanDuel account
GGPoker Ontario Poker-focused Ontario only No shared pool with its international network
BetMGM Poker Shared with BetMGM Casino and Sportsbook Reported to share a pool with partypoker Ontario, within the province One of three Ontario brands with all three products on one account
bwin Shared with bwin Casino and Sportsbook Part of the partypoker family; sharing with partypoker Ontario is likely but not documented Check whether a promotion is for poker, casino or sports before you opt in

When you compare rooms, look at traffic at the hours you actually play, your preferred stakes, the rake and the rewards. A room with busy micro-stakes tables at 9 p.m. Eastern is worth more to most players than one with a bigger headline guarantee. Check that the operator appears in iGaming Ontario’s public directory. Note that PokerStars is listed under FanDuel there, not under its own name.

Poker Formats Explained

Format How it works Suits
Cash games Chips equal real money, and you can leave at any time Flexible sessions
Multi-table tournaments Fixed buy-in, play until you are out or you win Big prizes for a small buy-in
Sit and Gos Small tournaments that start when the table fills Shorter sessions
Freerolls Free-entry tournaments with real prizes Learning at no cost

No-Limit Texas Hold’em is the most common game by far, and Pot-Limit Omaha is the main alternative. Our explainer on pocket pair strength in Hold’em is a useful starter, and our page on Canadian casino tournaments covers competitions more broadly.

Poker Hand Rankings

Rank Hand Example
1 Royal flush A K Q J 10, same suit
2 Straight flush 9 8 7 6 5, same suit
3 Four of a kind Q Q Q Q 3
4 Full house K K K 4 4
5 Flush Any five of one suit
6 Straight Five in sequence, mixed suits
7 Three of a kind 7 7 7 K 2
8 Two pair J J 4 4 A
9 One pair 10 10 K 5 2
10 High card A J 8 5 3, no pair

Starting Hands: What to Play

In Texas Hold’em you get two cards, and most hands should be folded. Beginners lose more by playing too many hands than through any other mistake. A simple starting framework:

Group Hands How to play them
Premium A-A, K-K, Q-Q, A-K Raise from any position
Strong J-J, 10-10, A-Q, A-J suited Raise, but be careful against heavy action
Speculative Small pairs, suited connectors such as 8-7 suited Play cheaply, ideally late in position, hoping to hit big
Fold Weak offsuit hands such as K-4 or J-3 Fold almost always

Some useful numbers: you are dealt pocket aces about 1 time in 221, and any pocket pair about 1 time in 17. A pocket pair flops three of a kind about 1 time in 8.5, which is why small pairs are only worth playing cheaply.

Position: The Biggest Edge Beginners Miss

Position is where you sit relative to the dealer button. Acting last after the flop is a major advantage, because you see what everyone else does before you decide.

  • Early position: you act first, so play only strong hands.
  • Middle position: you can widen your range a little.
  • The button and cutoff: the best seats. You can play the most hands here.
  • The blinds: you have money in the pot already, but you act first after the flop, so do not defend too often with weak hands.

The same hand can be a fold in early position and a raise on the button. Learning that one idea improves most new players more than memorising any chart.

Pot Odds in One Minute

Pot odds tell you whether a call makes sense. Compare the price of the call with your chance of winning. If the pot is C$30 and it costs C$10 to call, you are paying C$10 to win a C$40 pot, so you need to win about 25% of the time.

Your draw on the flop Chance of hitting by the river Chance with one card to come
Flush draw (9 outs) About 35% About 20%
Open-ended straight draw (8 outs) About 31.5% About 17%

In that example, a flush draw on the flop has enough equity to call if you will see both remaining cards for that price. On the turn, with one card to come, it does not, unless you expect to win more on the river.

How Poker Rooms Make Money: Rake

A poker room does not bet against you. It takes rake, a small percentage of each cash game pot up to a cap, or an entry fee on top of a tournament buy-in, shown as C$10 + C$1 for example. Rake is your real cost. Compare it between rooms, along with withdrawal speed (our ranking of fast payout casinos is a useful check) and rakeback or loyalty rewards, because a good reward program can return a meaningful share, much like the casino VIP programs in Canada we compare. Traditionally, poker room bonuses are released gradually as you earn points through play, not with a simple wagering multiple.

Poker Rooms vs Casino Poker

Poker room Live casino poker Video poker
Opponent Other players The dealer A pay table
Can you win long term? Yes, if you outplay opponents after rake No, the house has an edge No, except rare full-pay games with perfect play
Bluffing Yes No No
Availability Fewer sites Most live casinos Many casinos

If you want poker hands without other players, our pages on live casino poker games and video poker pay tables cover both options.

Tournament Basics

Tournaments play differently from cash games, because your chips are not money and the blinds keep rising.

  • Rising blinds force action, so you cannot wait forever for a good hand.
  • Prizes go to the top finishers, commonly around the top 10% to 15% of the field, and most of the money goes to the last few players.
  • The bubble is the stage just before the money places, when many players tighten up. Aggressive players take advantage of this.
  • Bounty or knockout events pay a prize for each player you eliminate.
  • Satellites let you win entry to bigger events for a small buy-in.
  • Re-entry events allow you to buy back in early on, which can make the true cost higher than the listed buy-in.

Because most entrants finish without a prize, tournament results swing much more than cash games. Ring-fenced Ontario fields are smaller, which means lower guarantees but also fewer players to beat.

Getting Started With Real Money Poker

  1. Confirm a licensed room is available in your province.
  2. Start at the lowest stakes, or play freerolls while you learn.
  3. Keep your poker bankroll separate. A common rule of thumb is at least 20 buy-ins for cash games, and more for tournaments, which swing harder. Our breakdown of bankroll and session strategy goes deeper.
  4. Learn position and starting hands before you worry about advanced moves.
  5. Deposit with a method you can withdraw to. Interac is the most widely supported in Canada.

Poker Winnings and Tax in Canada

Recreational gambling winnings are generally not taxed in Canada, but a player who treats poker as a business may be treated differently. Our explainer on whether casino winnings are taxable covers the distinction, and you should ask a tax professional about your own situation.

How We Assess Poker Rooms

We check licensing, player traffic, formats, rake and rewards, software and withdrawal speed. Our review methodology sets out the full process.

Poker Still Needs Limits

Skill does not make poker risk-free. Bad runs happen to good players, and chasing losses at higher stakes is the classic way to lose a bankroll. Set limits and stick to them. Our page on problem gambling help in Canada lists support in every province.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is online poker legal in Canada?

Yes in Ontario, through licensed rooms. Alberta has a regulated market, though we have not confirmed a poker room there. Elsewhere, Canadians use offshore or international rooms, and availability varies.

What are the best poker sites in Ontario?

The main regulated rooms include PokerStars on FanDuel, GGPoker, BetMGM Poker and bwin. All play in an Ontario-only pool.

What happened to PokerStars in Ontario?

The old PokerStars Ontario site closed in 2026, and the poker room relaunched inside FanDuel. Players had to open new FanDuel accounts.

Can Ontario players play against the rest of the world?

Not as of October 2026. Ontario’s regulated rooms use a province-only pool, although shared pools are being discussed.

What is rake in poker?

The room’s fee: a small percentage of each cash game pot up to a cap, or a fee added to a tournament buy-in.

Can you make money playing online poker?

Skilled players can win over time, because they play against others rather than the house. Most players do not beat the rake.

Is casino poker the same as a poker room?

No. Casino poker is played against the dealer with a fixed house edge. Poker rooms match you against other players.

Are poker winnings taxable in Canada?

Recreational winnings generally are not. Professional players may be treated differently, so ask a tax professional.
